Using AI-based face tracking, the system can follow an individual and measure the temperature of the inner eye corners for the most accurate measurement. The measurements are calibrated using a dual temperature reference as well as the gathered data from the whole group.

When measurements of the inner eye corner is not possible, for instance if the individual is wearing glasses, the system will fall back to using the forehead temperature, compensating for less reliable measurement using learnt correlations.

Does the system comply with the IEC 80601-2-59-2017 and ISO/TR 13154 standards?

Yes. For larger flows of people, the system can be used with good reliability even if you diverge somewhat from standard, e.g. pixel resolution in faces, faces turned directly towards the camera, eyeglasses. The system can analyze and compensate for distance, facial orientation vis-a-vis the camera and the section of the face that is visible.

How many people can the system screen per minute?

If used in its standard format, it can measure up to 30 people per minute assuming that they are at a safe distance of about 2 meters from each other to avoid contagion and that only one line (queue) is formed. Those being screened do not need to stand still but can move at walking pace, i.e. about 1m/s.

If a shorter safety distance is permitted, e.g. 1 meter between people, two lines can be screened, giving a rate of ca. 120 people per minute. Closer distancing and faster movement mean greater flows. The system requires only a brief snapshot to screen each person.

How do you ensure that the measurements are correct?

The reference temperature is traceable to national temperature standards and shall have a valid calibration protocol. The thermal camera shall have a valid calibration protocol issued by the manufacturer. Alternately, the calibration and function of the camera shall be controlled and the control recorded.

How do the temperature reference and thermal camera need to be calibrated?

We recommend yearly calibration of the reference temperature and of the camera. If the system is used after a longer period of storage, we recommend that it is calibrated even if it is less than a year since the previous calibration.

Can you save images from the IR and visual cameras?

Yes. For IR images, ISO/TR 13154, Ch. 7 requires that images are saved for at least one (1) month, and longer if so required by the authorities. It should be possible to upload data from the system to the relevant authorities.

Images and other data are considered electronic health information and shall be handled in line with patient confidentiality regulations (medical records) for each country. Access to such data shall be limited and in accordance with local legislation.

Does the system need an operator?

The system is highly automated. Where required, an operator might need to verify that none of the faces of the people in the line being screened are obscured. The flexibility and speed of the system means that it is enough to capture just a glimpse of each person at least once within the range of the system.

An operator is also required to respond to system alerts so that the person triggering the alert is taken to a secondary screening area, where their temperature is checked with a clinically approved thermometer.

Can the system be integrated with automated passport control?

Yes. Using the visual camera image, the system is also capable of checking personal identity.

What environmental requirements apply?

We meet standard requirements with good margin as the system can operate at ambient temperatures of 18–24 oC and a relative humidity of 10–75%. Limitations are determined by the effect on those being screened rather than by the equipment itself. Drafts (Draughts) should be avoided, especially at the reference temperature point and where those being screened are waiting or moving. Other sources of IR should also be avoided.

How can we be certain that the equipment can be rapidly deployed when the need arises?

We can store the equipment for you and ensure that it is calibrated and on the latest software update. If required, we can send it to you at short notice. An annual fee is charged for this service. Software can be updated remotely over the internet. The reference temperature should be controlled against a traceable source at least once a year. We provide this service for a fee as well.

How long does it take before screening can commence?

We recommend that you wait 30 minutes to enable the camera and the reference temperature to become stable.

I already have a thermal camera for temperature screening. Can I use it with your software?

That depends on which camera you have, but please contact us and we will let you know. We have extensive, in-depth knowledge of most FLIR cameras.
